Wal-Mart's history is like a curriculum vitae for the corporate founder Sam Walton. He started his discount store in 1950 by the name of Walton's Five and Dime. Walton had earlier operated a Ben Franklin store in Newport - Arkansas. He franchised it from 1944 to 1950 and then relocated in 1950 to Bentonville in Arkansas. He continued his association with Ben Franklin but renamed the shop to Walton's 5 and Dime.

Walton owned a modest network of Walton's Five and Dime shops by the late 1950s. He had realized that profitable discount retailing meant passing the savings to the customers in addition to obtaining the greatest rates from suppliers. This process of Walton was in plain contrast with his competitors though the larger sales in Walton's shops were proof that he had found a model that would encourage greater earnings for his enterprise.

Sam Walton owned 11 stores by 1962. He and his wife Helen took a huge gamble and reinvested every little thing into a new retailer at Rogers in Arkansas. This became the initial branded shop of Wal-Mart. This concept resulted in immediate good results resulting in an awesome development of the brand and 24 stores by 1967. Sam Walton incorporated the shops as Wal-Mart Retailers Inc in 1967. In 1972, the corporation got listed in the New York Stock Exchange. This supplied a money injection and permitted the organization to 125 stores by 1975 and then to 276 retailers by 1980.

Wal-Mart employees also felt the advantage of this incorporation. A lot of have been offered stock selections in return for their loyalty. In 1970, Sam Walton started to sell shares to firm more than the counter. Wal-Mart stock was worth $47by 1971, this was not enough to make millionaires but it elevated to an wonderful $49,875 per share in 1982. This was adequate for college expenses of the children that was an ambition many Wal-Mart's personnel have held.

The attitude of Wal-Mart was conservative with acquisitions but has been always strategic in nature. The 1st two acquisitions were obtaining the Mohr Value Shops and Hutcheson Shoe Firm in 1977, and then purchasing Kuhn's Large K Retailers in 1981. It would take one more nine years till Wal-Mart would make another acquisition. The internal growth of Wal-Mart has largely come from the numerous Wal-Mart stores.

Sam Walton stayed with the business throughout his life, he continued visiting stores and meeting staff even walking with them around the shop as they performed their tasks. Walton promised to do the hula wearing a hula skirt outdoors the NYSE as a gesture of solidarity with the personnel if the company produced a pre-tax profit of 8%. This would have created his gesture a very simple public stunt. The employees ultimately created it a reality. In 1998, Walton was listed in Time Magazine as 1 of the one hundred most influential men and women of the 20th century.

The sales and earnings of Wal-Mart continued to improve throughout the early 21st century with no indicators of any negative effects from the weakening global economy. By the end of 2006, Wal-Mart globally owned 6775 retailers, had far more than two million personnel and generated annual sales if practically $350 billion.
